Norway in a Nutshell
Norway in a Nutshell - what exactly is it? That is one of the most popular question we get from people heading to Norway. Everybody is talking about it - but how does it work…?
Norway in a Nutshell is more of a "tourist route" between Oslo and Bergen than a tour in itself in the conventional meaning of the word. It is a set of train, boat and bus transportation segments that are offered and priced in different combinations. No reservations are needed for the bus and boat segments, but for the train portions you can make reservations in advance. You can do the whole trip from Oslo to Bergen in one day - or you can stop overnight in one of the idyllic fjord hotels along the route.
For example, the most common combination is to start with the train from Oslo to Myrdal where the Flåm valley plunges down towards the Aurlandsfjord. In Myrdal you board the famous and historic Flåm railway line that is also one of the highlights of the trip. It is fascinating to be on the train as it glides through tunnels and open stretches on its way down the wild Flåm valley from mountain to fjord in just 20 km! You have a view of an ever-changing panorama of huge mountains and thundering waterfalls.
The railway ends in idyllic Flåm. Then you continue by boat on the Aurlandsfjord and into the Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest fjord inlets in Western Norway, surrounded by mountains up to 1,800m high. This fjord inlet of the Sognefjord is both beautiful and charming. Small west-country farms lie dotted along the mountainsides and you can often see goats grazing along the edge of the fjord. If you are lucky, you will also see seals lying on the smooth rocks along the shore.
The ship docks at beautiful Gudvangen. The next stage of the trip is the bus journey up the 13 steep, spectacular Stalheimskleivane hairpin bends, with views of the Stalheim and Sivle waterfalls, to the Stalheim hotel. After a brief stop here to enjoy the view, the journey continues to Voss followed by a relaxing train trip back to Bergen or Oslo. You can also do it as a day trip out of Bergen without even going as far as Oslo…
Another popular route includes train Oslo-Myrdal, historic railway Myrdal-Flåm and boat along the Sognefjord from Flåm to Bergen (this combination is actually called the "Sognefjord Expressboat"). There are quite a few possibilities, so you should definitely do your homework and consult a travel professional to get the most out of all the options offered.
This trip is perfect for somebody who wants to see the diversity of Norwegian countryside but does not have more than a day or two to spend. You can leave Oslo and return 24 hours later, having seen Bergen and caught a glimpse of the forests, mountains, fjords and waterfalls that Norway is so famous for! But if you have deeper interest in Norwegian nature, then it can serve as a brief introduction to all the fun things you are going to see and experience.
BAGGAGE CLAIM
KLM/Northwest Airlines Adjust International Free Baggage Allowance
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines / Northwest Airlines has just announced that they will reduce the free weight allowance for international checked baggage for customers in Economy Class who purchase tickets on or after September 1st, 2005. The free baggage allowance for International flights will be 50 pounds (23 kg) per piece instead of the previously allowed 70 pounds (32 kg). They claim that this policy change will provide a more consistent weight limit between domestic and international flights.
An overweight fee of $25 USD/$39 CAD will be assessed for bags that weigh between 50 (23 kg) and 70 (32 kg) pounds. Bags that weigh between 71 pounds (33 kg) and 100 pounds (46 kg) will still be accepted as checked baggage and are subject to the current fee calculation based on excess baggage rates for the applicable origin and destination.
We haven't seen similar announcements from other airlines yet, but usually the others follow quite promptly, matching the new rules and restrictions. So for international flights this coming fall and winter - please verify the currently valid baggage allowance with the airline or your travel agent before packing your suitcases!

IN-FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
Haircut before the Trip
A man was getting a haircut prior to a trip to Rome. He mentioned the trip to the barber who responded, "Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded, dirty, hot and noisy. You're crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?" - "We're taking TWA," was the reply. "We got a great rate!"
"TWA?" exclaimed the barber. "That's a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly, and they're always late. So, where are you staying in Rome?" - "We'll be at the downtown International Marriott."
"That dump! That's the worst hotel in the city. The rooms are small, the service is surly and they're overpriced. So, whatcha doing when you get there?"
"We're going to go to see the Vatican and we hope to see the Pope."
"That's rich," laughed the barber. "You and a million other people trying to see him. He'll look the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You're going to need it."
A month later, the man again came in for his regular haircut. The barber asked him about his trip to Rome. "It was wonderful," explained the man, "not only were we on time in one of TWA's brand new planes, but it was overbooked and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a beautiful 23 year old stewardess who waited on me hand and foot.
And the hotel was great! They'd just finished a $25 million remodeling job and now it's the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us the fabulous presidential suite at no extra charge!"
"Well," muttered the barber, "I know you didn't get to see the Pope."
"Actually, we were quite lucky, for as we toured the Vatican, a guard suddenly tapped me on the shoulder and explained that the Pope likes to personally meet some of the visitors, and if I'd be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me. Sure enough, five minutes later the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down as he spoke a few words to me."
"Really?" asked the barber. "What'd he say?"
He said, "Where'd you get such a bad haircut?"
The Haunted Hotels of America
A few years ago, The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver embarked on an extensive refurbishment of its top two floors. From 1937 to 1986, permanent guests lived in the twenty apartments on these floors. Coincidentally, during the renovation, Julia Kanellos, the hotel's historian, conducted a series of historical tours highlighting the stories of some of those permanent residents. One tale was about Mrs. Louise Crawford Hill who ruled Denver society and lived in room 904 for fifteen years (1940-1955). Soon after the stories about her life and heartbreak over a lost love were recounted on the tours, the hotel's main switchboard began receiving calls from room 904. When the hotel operator answered, there was nothing but static on the line. This was a great mystery because the room was stripped of furniture, lights, wallpaper, carpet and telephones due to the renovation. Kanellos eliminated Mrs. Hill's saga from the tour and the telephone calls from room 904 ceased.
In 1995, a bartender at The Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham, Ala., was responsible for turning everything off in the restaurant and kitchen at the end of the day. Since it was past midnight, he was the only person on duty. He began by turning off the lights in the bar, then the restaurant and then he would go downstairs to turn off the stoves and the kitchen lights. He clocked out but noticed lights were on again in the bar, as well as in the restaurant and, in the kitchen, the lights and stoves were on. He then turned everything off again. The process was repeated four times before the bartender finally left.
The next day, the hotel general manager wanted to know why everything was left on. The bartender explained what happened. The scenario repeated itself for five nights and each following day the bartender got in trouble. On the sixth day, the general manager called the bartender at home and told him to come to the hotel immediately. He could not believe his eyes. Someone had cooked a multi-course meal with candles, had drawn the curtains and taken a very old bottle of wine out of a locked cabinet. For years, rumors spoke of the spirit of Colonel Tutwiler, a local businessman, roaming the halls of the hotel. The bartender resolved the situation. Every night, the bartender would say, "good night colonel, please leave the lights and stoves off and don't make a mess!"
CRUISING ALTITUDE
Introducing Freestyle Cruising with
Norwegian Cruise Line
When Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) introduced its innovative "Freestyle" concept, they ushered in an extraordinary era which transformed the traditional cruise into a unique and far more personal choice experience. Designed to meet the changing needs of today's discerning cruise passenger, Freestyle Cruising offers guests a truly relaxed, resort-style experience, with perhaps most importantly, complete personal flexibility. There is only one schedule on NCL's freestyle ships, and that is yours.
Freestyle Dining: Dine wherever, whenever and with whomever you choose. There is never a need to sit with strangers as there are no assigned tables or specific seating times. In fact, restaurant hours are extended. Choices vary by ship of course, however you can anticipate taking your pick from à la carte, gourmet, ethnic, continental and sumptuous buffet presentations. And whether it's a casual party of 10 new friends, or a romantic dinner for two, just let NCL know and they'll take care of the rest.
As just one example of NCL's extraordinary selection, the Norwegian Star features the following dining options.
Aqua, for light menus; Versailles, an ornate main restaurant with traditional dining; The Soho Room, upscale California cuisine; Le Bistro, distinctive French Mediterranean fare; Blue Lagoon, a 24-hour food court with everything from burgers to stir-fry; Endless Summer, Tex Mex cuisine; La Trattoria, casual Italian for pizza and pasta; Market Café, buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner (includes a Kids Café where children have their own menu); Cagney's Steakhouse; Ginza, a Japanese, Chinese and Thai dining complex with a sushi bar, sake bar and teppanyaki room. Last, but not least, Sprinkles Ice Cream Bar.
Screens throughout the ship will display the status of all restaurants, indicating whether they are empty, half full or full. You can simply check the screen and decide which of the restaurants suits your fancy at the time. This clever idea isn't yet on all ships but is planned for implementation fleet wide soon.
Freestyle Attire: This is one of the most important and welcoming features of a Freestyle cruise. Simply dress according to your mood. After all, this is your vacation. There is no policy on attire and "resort casual" is as dressy as you'll ever need to get. However, on NCL, you can express your style whenever and wherever you choose, so if it's elegance you dream of, you're invited to indulge yourself too! Many restaurants have formal options and really, is anything more glamorous than the swish of silk, a glass of champagne, and a night dancing under the stars?
Freestyle Service: There is more staff than ever before to take care of you and the service ratio is nearly one crew member per stateroom. The polished, friendly, courteous and non-intrusive service is filled with quick smiles and equal to the finest resorts on land.
Freestyle Activities: For those who like to be active, NCL's new Lifestyle Programme features a host of activities perfect for decompressing, recharging and challenging your mind as well as your body. You'll find physically active excursions, health and wellness programmes, yoga, computers, cooking demonstrations and the like.
Freestyle Disembarkation: NCL has streamlined the whole process of disembarkation. No more "hurry up and wait." Unless you have an early flight, you can relax, have breakfast and enjoy more of your final morning aboard ship - right up until 10:30 a.m.
Freestyle Gratuities: NCL now automatically applies a service charge to your shipboard account: US$10 per guest per day for guests age 13 and above, US$5 per day for children age 3-12, and no service charge for little ones under three. Staff is permitted to accept cash gratuities entirely at the discretion of guests who wish to acknowledge particular staff members for outstanding service, e.g. a 15% gratuity is suggested for bar bills. As our last group special on the Norwegian Cruise Lines to Hawaii on December 07, 2005 was a huge success and was sold out in no time, we are offering you our next departure:
10-Day Exotic Southern Caribbean
MS NORWEGIAN SPIRIT,
departing New York on February 9th, 2006.
Price from $1369 CAD + taxes,

In a very quiet way, the Southern Caribbean, probably the least known part of the region, is becoming one of the most interesting.
The islands of the Southern Caribbean, which translate roughly to those lying east and south of St. Maarten/St. Martin, have always been slightly more exotic than counterparts in the Western and Eastern Caribbean. Part of that is due to the very strong colonial influence that pervades many of these islands, a great percentage of which are still related to France, the Netherlands and the U.K. usually the cruise itineraries try to include islands of a different flavor.
On this cruise the ship visits St. Thomas, Antigua, Barbados, St, Maarten and Tortola.
