"Norway in
a Nutshell "
with a Stopover in Fretheim Hotel in Flåm NNS-01
This unique tour takes you through some of the most
magnificent scenery in Western Norway! Enjoy the two
days packed with adventure!
Departures
- Daily January to November
The Bergen Line - crossing the roof of Norway
The 471-km rail link between Oslo in east and Bergen
in west is a dramatically beautiful train journey. This
line is exposed to harsh weather and wind, which is
one of the greatest challenges. At a height of 1 222m,
Finse is the highest station on the Bergen Line. At
Myrdal the Flåm valley plunges down towards the
Aurlandsfjord.
The Flåm railway line - a masterpiece of engineering
The journey on the Flåm railway line is one of
the highlights of the trip. It is fascinating to be
on the train as it glides through tunnels and open stretches
on its way down the wild Flåm valley from mountain
to fjord in just 20 km! You have a view of an ever-changing
panorama of huge mountains and thundering waterfalls.
The railway ends in idyllic Flåm, it's time to
check into the Fretheim Hotel for the overnight and
spend the rest of your day enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
Sail the Sognefjord
The next morning enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Continue
by boat on the Aurlandsfjord and into the Nærøyfjord,
one of the narrowest fjord inlets in Western Norway,
surrounded by mountains up to 1,800m high. This fjord
inlet of the Sognefjord is both beautiful and charming.
Small west-country farms lie dotted along the mountainsides
and you can often see goats grazing along the edge of
the fjord. If you are lucky, you will also see seals
lying on the smooth rocks along the shore.
Stalheimskleivane
The ship docks at beautiful Gudvangen. The next stage
of the trip is the bus journey up the 13 steep, spectacular
Stalheimskleivane hairpin bends, with views of the Stalheim
and Sivle waterfalls, to the Stalheim hotel. After a
brief stop here to enjoy the view, the journey continues
to Voss followed by a relaxing train trip back to Bergen
or Oslo.
This trip is priced according to which itinerary
of the 5 options you choose for the train/boat/bus transportation.
The direction of travel is optional and other enroute
stopovers are also permitted. Ask us for details!

"Norway in
a Nutshell " & Sognefjord Expressboat
with a Stopover in Kvikne's Hotel in Balestrand NNS-03
This unique tour takes you through some of the most
magnificent scenery in Western Norway! If you want to
see more of the famous Sognefjord, this tour is ideal!
Enjoy the two days packed with adventure!
Departures
- Daily May to September
The Bergen line
This round trip takes you on a wonderful boat voyage
along the Sognefjord, combined with a spectacular train
journey on the Flåm railway line. You can choose
whether to start the trip by train or boat. Whether
you depart from Oslo or Bergen, the train journey to
Myrdal takes you through some beautiful scenery. However,
when you arrive at Myrdal station and go aboard the
Flåm train, you will start a journey that will
take your breath away.
The Flåm railway
An amazing railway trip. The train meanders downwards
and, looking at the steep mountainsides, it is difficult
to imagine that it can go any further. The view below
is stunning. Once you get to Flåm, you have time
to wander around a bit or have a bite to eat.
The Sognefjord, Europe's longest fjord
The trip along the Sognefjord by express boat provides
a view of the stunningly high mountains along the Aurlandsfjord,
and of the small alpine farms surrounded by small patches
of grass far up the mountainsides. As you approach the
coast, the landscape becomes less hilly, and there is
plenty of bird life.
Balestrand lies between towering, snow-covered
mountains and the majestic Sognefjord in a beautiful
and lush fjord landscape. The Swedish poet Esias Tegnèr
writes of Balestrand in his well-known saga on Fridtjof
the Brave, Ingebjørg and the Viking King Bele
(1825). The book was very popular in Europe and inspired
the romantic painters to visit the area in the mid-1800's.
It was not just the saga but the impressive scenery
and the constantly changing light that brought many
painters here to capture the fascinating play of light
on canvas. The artists travelled around Europe showing
their works, and many who saw them were fascinated and
came to see all this natural beauty for themselves.
In the mean time many of the artists had built themselves
summer reidences along the fjord, and strange houses
in "dragestil" (Dragon Style) and the European
"Swiss Style" were built, giving the district
its special characteristics.
You will make a stop in beautiful Balestrand and check
into the historic Kvikne's Hotel for overnight.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and continue by boat to
Bergen, the cultural centre of western Norway,
and experience some of its summer attractions.
This trip is priced according to which itinerary
of the 3 options you choose for the train/boat/bus transportation.
The direction of travel is optional and other enroute
stopovers are also permitted. Ask us for details!
